My favorite peaces

Yesterday, was my final day in ceramic class and it was also a presentation of best ceramic peaces that each one made. I took some pictures as usual of my favorite one, it is simple bowl shaped by hands and glazed with Clair glaze. Also I painted some flowers on it with black under glaze. You may see some other work next to the art bowl, it is not finished because it took so long to dry out. Hopefully I will finish it next semester.

Glazing Methods

Today our teacher gave us a theory lesson about glazing the clay. There is five ways to glaze the clay:

  1. Dip pots into glaze: it is one of the fastest way of glazing the clay.
  2. Pour clay in and on: to glaze the interior of the pot all what you have to do is just poured the fluid glaze into a pot and left it for about three seconds, then poured back into the original glaze bucket. The same method could be apply to the surface, all what you have to do is to pour the clay on the surface.
  3. Brush glaze on.
  4. Sponge glaze on.
  5. spray glaze on.

Big bowl

Today when i went to my class i had this idea of making me a big bowl for salad since i bricked it mine the night before. Fore a reason that i don't know i couldn't focus on what i'm doing, after making the bowl i dropped it on the floor. And of course i had to make another one since i don't want to give up. My day star wasn't that great but i finished by making me a new salad bowl and i'm planning to glaze it turquoise.

Cancelled class

Since my class was cancelled today i decided to search for blogs about clay. All the blogs that i found were for professional people but it was good to see other artist job and their experiences with new techniques to make a unique work that express themselves.
For people who are interested in clay art there is a website where you can go and get more information and  if you have your own experience you can share it with them.

my first hand-built ceramic plate

After long time of experiencing different techniques to built something that has a clear shape, I still can not come up with a nice looking dish. All what i want to make is a simple plate, how i am going to do it? that was the hard part. This past class i talked to my teacher about my difficulties and she gave me some directions to fallow:
First thing, i have to roll out a slab of clay into the desired thickness by using a rolling pin. Then, remove the slab carefully and place it into the ceramic bisque molds to get the desired shape. After that, i have to leave the clay till gets dry and remove it from the mold.
I actually followed my teacher's instructions except the last one because the clay take time to dry. Hopefully this time i will have a nice plate.
Here are some pictures that shows the rolling machine, the oven where the clay gets fired, and the last one is the plate that i made:

New technique of working the clay

Starting a new hobby could be daunting As well as exciting. Now that I'm getting into the world of ceramic it start getting harder more than what I expected it would be. This time we had to work with a new equipment it called "clay extrudes." this tool actually helps you to create a large shapes of clay with great results. From my experience, to use this tool you have to put your whole weight on it to push the clay out with the shape that you want. In my case I had to ask one of my classmate for help which it was funny. In the end of the class, I was so happy and glad that I learned something new and that I had a lot of fun even tough I was really exhausted.
Here are some pictures that I took from my last class:

First Day

Since I came in the united state I Felt that something is missing in my life, even though that  i have a nice social life. Now that I started the ceramic class I can tell what it was missing "fun". I can say that my first day was a really enjoyable experience, The first technique that I learned was how to work the clay with my hands to get the bubbles of air out of it. Watching my classmates Trying different hand building techniques, pulling ans shaping clay for the first time made my experience more enjoyable. In the end of my class I found that getting your hands dirty is always a fun experience. Finally, I like to thank my friend Rita for her suggestion to take this class.
